Donny Dong is an independent filmmaker, cinematographer, and photographer based in Adelaide, South Australia.
The short version
His interest in storytelling began with independent filmmaking and screenwriting in China, before bringing his practice to Australia where he works across documentary and narrative film production.
His work focuses on authentic, human-centred stories — blending cinematic visuals with a strong sense of realism.
He is drawn to observational and poetic approaches to documentary, and to narratives that find meaning in quiet, everyday moments.
How I work
Three things that don't change.
01
Story before camera
We figure out what the film is actually about before we talk about gear, locations, or a single shot. Everything after that is in service of the answer.
02
Small and deliberate
A tight crew, real locations, available light where it serves the story. Fewer moving parts means more attention on the things that matter.
03
Made to last
I’d rather make something you can watch in five years than something that performs for a week. Restraint is how a film keeps its weight.
